Learn how to stay safe online this Cybersecurity Awareness Month.

Cybersecurity Awareness Month

Since 2004, October has been recognized as Cybersecurity Awareness Month as an effort by the U.S. Dept. of Homeland Security (DHS) and the National Cybersecurity Alliance (NCA) to increase online safety and security across the nation. Over the past 20 years, cybersecurity has become a central part of society thanks to huge advances in digital infrastructure and the many ways in which we all work, play, and live online.

This year’s theme is Secure Our World, as a reminder of ways to protect our personal and professional lives from online threats. Cybersecurity is necessary wherever there is technology. Implementing best practices is essential for individuals and organizations alike, especially considering the many standards for information technology regulatory compliance applicable to both government and private sector entities.

Regardless of technological changes, the DHS and NCA recommend four simple methods to ensure a safe online experience:

• Use strong passwords and a password manager
• Turn on Multifactor Authentication (MFA)
• Recognize and report phishing attacks
• Update your software

Throughout the month of October, Blip Talk will have helpful posts that go into these cybersecurity best practices in more detail, as well as other tips for both your personal and professional well-being in cyberspace.

Included below are some resources from the DHS and NCA that provide a great starting point for cybersecurity education during Cybersecurity Awareness Month.
